Erica McWhorter

Staff Lawyer


Erica McWhorter is a Staff Lawyer at HomeBase, with a background rich in social advocacy and strategic planning. Erica attended the University of California at Los Angeles where she obtained degrees in Political Science and Geography and Environmental Studies. After graduating from UCLA in 2005, Erica attended The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where her studies ranged from public justice to intellectual property. While there she was honored with a year-long J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Public Service Fellowship and Tuition Scholarship and an editorial staff position on the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Quarterly Journal.

Most recently, Erica has worked in and with the criminal justice system, including as Deputy General Counsel for a nonprofit dedicated to innovative and community oriented prosecution and criminal justice reform strategies and programs. Previously, Erica worked in Baltimore, Maryland as an Assistant Public Defender handling a variety of criminal and quasi-criminal cases. In addition to her litigation experience, Erica has also worked as an analyst with the military and federal government performing research, complex analysis and assessments, strategic planning, and public speaking. She has also practiced independently as a legal and strategic adviser, board member, and grant and policy writer for a growing clientele of nonprofit organizations. Erica looks forward to additional opportunities that involve research, writing, policy, strategic planning, and creative problem solving.
